Georgia Needs a Time-Out on Executions
The Death Penalty Is Broken:
· Since 1973, over 135 people have been exonerated from death rows across the country (5 from Georgia)
· Georgia does not fully fund legal defense for the poor
· Race, poverty and county play stronger roles in sentencing than the brutality of crimes
· 80% of Georgia death sentences have been reversed due to serious error
The Georgia General Assembly Should:
ü take a time-out on executions, study and address the systematic problems
ü protect the safeguard of having all 12 jurors decide on death sentences
ü ensure law enforcement follows standards for accurate eyewitness identifications
ü fully fund the public defender’s office so the poor have equal justice
